Educators play a critical role in the identification and development of children’s special learning needs. At kidsFIRST, we work hand-in-hand with teachers, administrators, and learning support staff, ensuring access to evidence-based classroom strategies and techniques to educate each child with distinction.

As of 2015, kidsFIRST has partnered with over 50 UAE schools and nurseries to enhance their SEN infrastructure and processes. Our June 2012 educator survey revealed that:

• 93% rate kidsFIRST as very good or excellent.

• 86% find kidsFIRST classroom advice helpful or very helpful.

Teacher Training Workshops

kidsFIRST provide teacher training workshop sessions with individual teachers or Year Groups focusing on specific children. A kidsFIRST consultant is provided for 1-2 hours and case studies are presented by teachers. Advice, classroom observations, and specific training and accommodations are given. These are then implemented in the classroom and reviewed for impact in the following session after one or two weeks. This ensures quality training and acquisition of new skills for teachers.

Screenings

School and nursery screenings allow teachers to determine if there are children that may need assistance in specific areas during the course of the school year. They also allow our therapists to offer teachers specific strategies to best help these children. Our professional team can conduct screenings for all of your foundation/kindergarten classes. Therapists assess the child’s language, language processing, visual perception, fine motor skills, and motor planning skills.

Screenings aid teachers and staff working with these students as they will be aware of each child’s specific areas of difficulty, and can better help the students achieve their full potential. Screenings allow action to be be taken without losing an entire academic year.

Makaton Language Programme

Used extensively in the UK, British Makaton is a unique language programme which offers a structured, multi-modal approach for the teaching of communication, language and literacy skills for children and adults who experience a broad range of communication and learning difficulties.

Makaton combines signs (hand gestures) and or symbols (visual pictures) always with speech, using everyday functional vocabulary. It is primarily designed to reinforce the spoken and written word; signs support the speech and symbols support the written word.

An individual can use any combination of signs and symbols to suit their communicative needs which significantly increases opportunities for expressive communication. It is also increasingly being used to stimulate the development of early language in normally developing babies and toddlers.
