Makaton Language Programme

Used extensively in the UK, British Makaton is a unique language programme which offers a structured, multi-modal approach for the teaching of communication, language and literacy skills for children and adults who experience a broad range of communication and learning difficulties.

Makaton combines signs (hand gestures) and or symbols (visual pictures) always with speech, using everyday functional vocabulary.  It is primarily designed to reinforce the spoken and written word; signs support the speech and symbols support the written word.

An individual can use any combination of signs and symbols to suit their communicative needs which significantly increases opportunities for expressive communication. It is also increasingly being used to stimulate the development of early language in normally developing babies and toddlers.

Hanen Program

The More Than Words Program was designed specifically for parents of young children and under on the autism spectrum and with other social communication difficulties. Addressing the unique needs of these children, the program provides parents with the tools, strategies and support they need to help their children reach their full communication potential.
